Ever since she was a kid, Sandara Park
has always been a dreamer. When she auditioned for a slot in Star Circle
Quest she had nothing with her but a dream of striking gold in the
showbiz industry.
Understandably so, because Sandara’s family moved to the Philippines in
1995 after her parents ran into financial woes back in their native
Korea.
When Sandy—that’s how she’s known among friends—came to Manila
she hardly knew how to speak in English, much less, in Filipino. As a
result, she became a loner. But that didn’t faze her at all. The
bright-eyed Sandy was a naturally talkative kid. Never mind if she would
be at times the butt of joke for mispronouncing words. So when she
started opening up, friends started pouring in.
“I can do it,” said the 19-year-old TV celebrity with so much conviction that she startled a few persons sitting nearby.
Sandy lives and breathes those words. The only thing she can remember
giving up is her piano lessons a couple of years ago as most of her
classmates there were just a bunch of kids who never stopped laughing at
her.
“I could not shout at them because they were just kids,” said Sandara.
But she doesn’t let this get the better of her. All it would take was a steaming bowl of sinigang
or her favorite fried chicken to brighten up her day again. Or, if all
else fails, she would turn to her computer and get lost in the
information superhighway, either surfing to find her favorite Korean
singer Lee Hyori and Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez or just chatting with friends back in Korea.
Reach for the stars
When Neri, a fellow questor, was booted out of SCQ’s Magic 5 selection, it became so controversial that the show was dissed by a lot of people.
Indeed, it was a tough decision for the judges to make since a mere .2
spelled the difference. What most people didn’t know was that it was a
tougher pill for Sandara to swallow.
“I know Neri is more talented than I,” she admitted in
an interview, adding that they all exerted effort to be their best. At
some point during the competition, Sandy said she even wanted to cry
because she felt everybody in Aliw Theater hated her.
But despite the huge brouhaha the decision caused, Sandara was not yet
ready to throw in the towel just like that. She took into herself to
prove to the people who believed and texted for her that she deserved her
keep in the Magic 5.
It’s only when she saw the immense number of crowd screaming out her
name and rooting for her that she knew there was nothing to do but to
move forward.
Despite the victory of the talented and much- favored Hero Angeles, Sandara still kept her hopes high. And it proved her right. As most Olympians would put it, after falling short in a heated gold medal match, “I did not get the gold. I won the silver.”
Sandy might not have won the title, but she’s earned the attention of countless fans, something far greater than one million.
Aside from the regular tapings for Sandara’s Romance, ASAP Fanatic, and
SCQ Reload, five commercials and other promos are waiting for the young
star.
With a schedule so packed, small wonder this kid has no time to even go
to the mall to buy her own clothes. Handler Anna Yambao, whom Sandy
fondly calls Anna Banana, said that there are times when she’s the one
who rushes to the nearest mall just to buy Sandy some stuff.
We love Sandy
When it
comes to the looks department, Sandy is obviously raking in gold medals.
It doesn’t take an Einstein just to figure out that this girl has a
face that can launch a thousand ships, so to speak.
Ever since she raised her hand for that now famous wave and smiled on
camera, Sandy became an instant darling. (Hey, she did not earn those
500,000 votes in less than a week for nothing!)
Apart from over 5,000 search results of Web pages carrying her name,
Sandy has a growing Yahoo Group with more than 2,000 members, an amazing 500
Friendster accounts of registered wannabes, and a never-ending forum
generating thousands of replies from die-hard followers every day. Not
to mention the legions of angry fans defending Sandy from those
“obnoxious ones” who pit her against Starstruck ultimate survivor
Jennylyn Mercado. Beneath their grammatically-challenged barbs, and
often times empty words, the fans give Sandy reason to keep on running
her hand doing that famous wave and smile.
“Maybe because I’m not boring. People think I am funny,” she giggles, admitting that it hurts her when people don’t understand her jokes. “Sometimes my jokes really come out corny. It’s just so embarrassing.”
With all the blessings she’s enjoying, what else could Sandara ask for? “I want to have an album, but not like In or Out. I want to have an album like one of those of Regine Velasquez, something serious. I want people to take me as a serious performer,” she concludes.
